Why OEM Evaluation Matters
Sourcing industrial equipment from India requires a structured approach to OEM qualification. The difference between a capable manufacturer and an unqualified one often isn't visible on a website — it shows up in manufacturing quality, delivery reliability, and how they handle technical deviations. A systematic evaluation process protects your procurement investment.
The Five Pillars of OEM Evaluation
At Targett International, we assess each OEM across five critical dimensions before recommending them to clients:
1. Manufacturing Capability
Does the OEM have the workshop capacity, machinery, and skilled workforce to produce your equipment to specification? We verify floor space, CNC/fitting capacity, welding certifications, and production throughput. An OEM that excels at bag filters may not be equipped for ESP high-voltage assemblies.
2. Quality Systems
ISO 9001 certification is a baseline, not a differentiator. We look at quality documentation practices, in-process inspection protocols, material traceability, and test certificates. For pressure equipment, ASME U-stamp or PED compliance matters. For electrical components, IEC standards apply.
3. Delivery Track Record
Past performance is the best predictor. We request delivery timelines from recent projects and verify them against client references. We also assess inventory management practices — OEMs with better material planning deliver more reliably.
4. Technical Documentation
Equipment comes with documentation. Can the OEM provide material test certificates, dimensional inspection reports, fabrication procedures, and O&M manuals? Poor documentation creates problems during installation and regulatory compliance.
5. Reference & Reputation
We contact previous clients to verify the OEM's claims. References from similar projects in similar industries carry the most weight. We also check for any history of contractual disputes or quality failures.
The Technical Bid Evaluation Process
Once multiple OEMs are qualified, technical bid evaluation becomes the decision-making layer. We compare bids on technical compliance (not just price), assess deviations, and provide engineering justification for the recommended vendor. This ensures the procurement decision is technically sound — not just commercially attractive.
